elearningport.com kicks off its blog life with an entry on Pisay Meets World! Thanks so much to Mr. Jun Asis!

eLearning in the Philippines is still in its infancy. We all know the issues. Hardware, software, people, know-how, vision, access, budget and a whole host of concerns. Yet we see on the horizon a glimpse of what could be and we breathe a sigh of relief. There is hope.

Take for example Philippine Science High School’s project Pisay Meets World.

I believe this is an eLearning endeavor that succeeded because it contains the 4 elements of learning: Motivation, Retention, Reinforcement and Transference.

Motivation: If my Social Studies classes were as fun as this one, I wouldn’t have crammed and forced myself to study. Turn a seemingly and often neglected subject into a hip and challenging and creative endeavor and you’ll get an overwhelming response. From the ripples in the blogosphere, even non-stakeholders are interested.

Retention: You can’t even fathom the myriad of lessons learned here. I have not seen all their work, and I am not privy to the actual objectives, but I’ll venture some guesses which may go beyond the reach of the subject. Take for example Pisay Myths World: Technology (Video/YouTube) as a form of social interaction, free speech, expression and open communication; Creativity (video production, storyline, scriptwriting, editing); Social skills; Self-assessment; Learning about prejudice and biases; Developing self-confidence; Enjoying (yes… you have to learn that too).

Reinforcement: I don’t know what their teacher say in the classroom, but judging from his comments in his blog, I think that they have a good dose of it. Additionally, putting it online opened up a whole world of feedback. How do you think I got wind of it?

Transference: While I do not have actual data to prove that transference has occurred, the output they have made is a testimony in itself.

And these are just second year students (aged 12-14, maybe) . Expect a World of Good from them.
