Recommendation letter woes…

That’s it. The recommendation letter to the Ateneo de Manila University is one of the vaguest forms I’ve ever had to fill out. I’m currently eating up a stack for my ‘08 students and here’s the problem. When evaluating their performance, I only have three choices: above average, average or below average. What is average? Average in Pisay? Average relative to their colleagues? Or average everywhere else?

I’m sorry to say but an average Pisay student is just above average everywhere else. They’re really that good. And while some students are not as good as others, I just can’t get myself to give them average because I am sure that other teachers in other schools will give their students average. It’s really difficult to compare because our standards are different.

It would help if the form was better calibrated. For example: Superior (belongs to upper 3% of their batch), Excellent (upper 10% of their batch), Outstanding (upper 25% of their batch) and so on.

But with the way things are, I’m inclined to give them all above average (even if it isn’t enough for some of you). Okay lang ba yun, guys? :)
