The Lesson Plan

As I am reading: Obama’s “Dreams from my Father”

As I am reading Barack Obama’s “Dreams from my Father”, the newswires were filled with a report that an Obama rally in Portland, Oregon drew a record crowd of 75,000 people. Incredible. When does that ever happen? For rock concerts and the Pope maybe, but not to hear a politician speak in a campaign rally.

All this is made even sweeter by the fact that I have at hand a memoir he wrote fourteen years ago. Dreams From My Father was written way before he had political ambitions. At that time, he simply wanted to write about his views on race and civil rights, but instead he ended up writing a powerful narrative that weaved his life story with the pursuit of the American dream.

The book is beyond compelling. I have tracked Obama’s candidacy very closely; I have observed his style and studied his every word. What blows me away in Dreams From My Father is how consistent he is with his own personal narrative. Everything we’ve seen him do so far — including writing what he did in The Audacity of Hope — can all be traced to his birth in Hawaii, his childhood in Indonesia, and his earliest days as a community organizer. Being a firm believer that we all have the power — and the duty — to write our own personal narratives, I am convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt in the sincerity of Obama’s candidacy. Moreover, I am also sure that if the White House may be where his story takes him next, that is not where it will end. There is a destiny even greater than that for a man such as Barack.

I give this book my highest recommendation.

Copies can be easily found in our bookstores. Sorry, no word on e-books.

What I think is so incredible about Barack Obama is his ability to think enough of himself to write an autobiography at the ripe “old” age of 38. He hasn’t really done anything important enough yet to dedicate a whole book after. He is not my man for president. He is too caught up in himself to care for the needs of an entire country. I find it amazing that you find his book sincere. He flaggrantly uses racial slurs toward white people throughout his writing. It makes me sick.
